How Long Can You Keep a Dumpster?
3 days as standard, seven if you book the seven-day term, or as long as you like on an open-ended rental at $16 a day past the first 3.
That is the short answer, and it is on our FAQ already. What is not written down anywhere is which of the three actually costs you least, because that depends on a crossover point — and the crossover lands earlier than it looks.
The three options, as prices

Notice that the seven-day premium is $40 on every size — it does not scale with the container. That is 4 extra days for $40, or about $10.00 a day, against $16 a day open-ended.
The crossover is day 5
Work the open-ended rate forward against the flat seven-day price and the answer is the same on all three sizes:

So: finishing by day 5, book open-ended. Day 6 or later, book the seven-day term — at a full week it is $24 cheaper than having run the day rate to the same point.
Past seven days there is only one option, and it is open-ended. From there the day rate simply continues.
Which to pick when you genuinely do not know
Open-ended, and that is the honest answer rather than the cautious one. A renovation that slips a week is normal; a cleanout that takes two evenings instead of one is normal. Open-ended does not charge you for the days you did not use, so an early finish is a real saving rather than a term you already paid for.
The one situation where a fixed term is clearly right is a job with a hard external date — a closing, a listing photo shoot, a tenant move-in. There the finish day is not a guess, so buy the days you know you need.
The mistake that actually costs money
Not the term. It is letting the pickup date arrive with the container still in use, because a truck that comes out and cannot take the load has to come back — and a return trip is $150. One phone call before the date avoids it entirely, and extending is never treated as a problem.
