What you're actually taking down
A poured slab over compacted base, often with wire mesh or rebar inside it and a thickened edge or footing at the perimeter. Thickness is the variable that matters most: a four-inch patio and a six-inch driveway apron behave very differently under a breaker.
How it comes apart
- 1Locate and mark anything running under or beside the slab before breaking — conduit, irrigation, a sewer or water line
- 2Score and break in sections sized to be lifted rather than dragged, so the base underneath is not churned up
- 3Cut reinforcement as it is exposed; mesh and rebar come out separately rather than riding along inside the rubble
- 4Load as we break — concrete rubble is not stockpiled on a lawn where it will sink in
- 5Footings and thickened edges removed or left, decided with you before the quote
- 6Base raked level so the area can be re-poured, planted or gravelled
Where the debris goes
Slab, footings and any brick. Massachusetts bans asphalt pavement, brick and concrete from disposal, so this material is separated and routed accordingly rather than mixed into a general load.
Wire mesh, rebar and any embedded steel, pulled out as it is exposed and sent to scrap.
Access we need
Room for a machine with a breaker where the slab is reachable, or hand-breaking where it is not. A back patio behind a fence line is a slower job than a driveway, and we say which one you have after walking it rather than from a photo.
Concrete and slab removal runs around $4–$6 per square foot, depending on thickness, reinforcement, access and disposal. Weight is what drives it: dumpster overage bills at $0.13/lb over the included allowance, and masonry reaches that ceiling faster than any other material.
