Bedford says its own services are not for cleanouts
“Curbside bulky and white goods services are not for cleanouts or tenant turnover.”
That sentence is the town's, in capitals, on its own trash page — and the overflow bags carry the same caveat: they are not a substitute for a trash cart and not for cleanouts. Bedford then names the two routes it does want residents to use: a private disposal service, or a dumpster bag.
We are not reading that generously. Those are the town's two named routes, and both of them happen to be ours. A private disposal service is either junk removal, where the crew does the carrying, or a roll-off container you load yourself — a cleanout is junk removal's core job, and the town's words cover both. The other route is a dumpster bag pickup.

And construction debris is prohibited outright
Bedford's municipal trash programme prohibits construction materials — the town names toilets and sinks — and wood waste including pallets. The Bedford Recycling Center will not take scrap wood or pallets either, nor anything of mixed material a resident cannot separate. The town's own instruction is to contact a private hauler or use a dumpster bag.
Where a town publishes no answer on renovation debris we say exactly that, rather than reading a refusal into the silence. Bedford is not one of those towns: the rule is written down, on two town pages, and the recycling centre repeats it.
The recycling centre takes streams, and says what it will not take
A free resident sticker from the DPW at 314 Great Road, during business hours, with proof of residency — a vehicle registration or a utility bill. The centre takes named streams and refuses the rest; it is not somewhere to bring a load.

What the carts hold, and what happens past them
Each residential unit — including accessory dwelling units and multi-family properties of up to four units — is assigned one 48-gallon trash cart and one 64-gallon recycling cart. Trash beyond the closed cart goes in blue town overflow bags, which the town sells through local retailers and prices on its fee schedule.
Bulky items are booked, not put out
Bulky items and white goods are booked, not simply put out — through the town's Recycle Coach tool or in person at the DPW, and the town does not take the booking by phone. A bulky item is a burnable, non-metal household item too large for the cart or an overflow bag. White goods are large metal appliances and electronics needing special handling, and metal furniture and tires ride the same route. Fees apply and the town publishes them on its own fee schedule.
- bulky items — burnable, non-metal, too large for the cart or an overflow bag
- white goods — large metal appliances and electronics needing special handling
- metal furniture and tires, on the white goods route
- trash beyond the closed cart, in blue town overflow bags
We publish no Bedford figure for any of it, and the reason is specific rather than cautious: an earlier town FAQ gave a flat amount for bulky furniture and for mattresses, and Bedford's 2026 Annual Guide then revised the rates for bulky items, mattresses, white goods and overflow bags. The older numbers may be superseded, we have not read the new ones, and a stale fee is worse than no fee. The town's fee schedule is the place to look.
Yard waste. Curbside on one date in spring and three in autumn, plus a Christmas tree collection in January. The town encourages residents to bring it to the recycling center instead.
Bedford names no hauler on its pages — collection is described in the DPW's own voice — so we name none either. Everything above is the town's, and the town's pages govern it.
